In her prime, Ma Hunkel was a surprsingly strong woman. Many who encountered her often believed that the Red Tornado, was in fact a man, a notion that helped protect Ma's secret identity on more than one occasion.

- Few people know that Ma Hunkel was the original Red Tornado. Even during her brief stint as a crime fighter, people often mistook her for a man.
Trivia
- The 1940s cultural icon known as, Rosie the Riveter, has been ascribed to the character of Ma Hunkel (Not to be confused with "Rosie", an agent of Anthem from Earth-50 continuity).
- A version of the Red Tornado appeared in the futuristic Elseworlds story, Kingdom Come. The true identity of this new Red Tornado was ultimately revealed to be the Kingdom Come counterpart to Abigail's granddaughter Maxine. [1]
