History
The true biological son of Bruce Wayne of an alternate Earth-Two like reality in which the elder Wayne married and had his own direct children, Bruce Wayne Jr. did not truly appreciate his father's legacy though did actively train effectively to the same levels both physically and mentally as did Grayson who became Wayne, Sr.'s junior partner, Robin.
But unlike Grayson who was appreciative of the Batman identity, Wayne. Jr. resisted his father's heroic legacy as Wayne, Jr. did not go through the same direct personal loss of family as his father and Grayson. Also Wayne, Jr. did not want to be merely known as the son of his famous father. Sharing the same situation of being thought of as a mere successor to his famous father, Wayne Jr. went off with his best friend Clark Kent, Jr. the half human son of Superman, Sr. in a period of self discovery. It is during this period of road trip that Wayne, Jr. determines his own sense of sense and they decide to become the successors of their fathers in their own way and form the duo team known as The Supersons.
When Bruce Wayne Sr. was shown to be murdered (World's Finest 228), Wayne, Jr. reluctantly teamed up with his father's former ward Grayson who as Robin was more directly appreciative of the Batman identity even directly challenging Wayne, Jr. for the right to become the next Batman. Grayson and Wayne, Jr. put aside their differences and successfully teamed up to find Wayne, Sr.'s killer who was revealed not to have actually succeed in killing Wayne, Sr. Grayson and Wayne, Jr. agreed to disagree who would be the next Batman though came to respect each other's abilities and determination as both successful protegees of Batman, Sr. in their own respective identities.
It is never stated in-story who ultimately directly succeeded Wayne, Sr. when Wayne, Sr. became too old to continue on in the role of the original Batman.
Bruce Wayne, Jr. along with all members of his reality were killed during the Crisis on Infinite Earths which destroyed their universe and historically erased him and his reality from ever happening.

Notes
A duplicate recreation of Bruce Wayne, Jr. and his Earth was shown during the Infinite Crisis termed as Earth-154. This Earth and all of its inhabitants were destroyed at the end of the Infinite Crisis.
Presently there is no known recreation of the Supersons reality in the current 52 multiverse, thus no exact known counterpart of Bruce Wayne, Jr. The closest parallel is the suggested biologicial son of Bruce Wayne Ibn al Xu'ffasch aka Damian. However Ibn al Xu'ffasch is completely opposite to his father's attitude unlike Bruce Wayne, Jr. who merely did not want to be known as his father's son and not resistant to his father's attitude of right and wrong unlike Ibn al Xu'ffasch who was raised as his grandfather's successor Ra's al Ghul and is an active assassin, reminiscent of the Earth-One Batman's brother Thomas Wayne, Jr. who also was an assassin.
Grayson of DC Primary Earth did succeed Wayne as Batman III of New Earth after Jean Paul Valley proved to be ultimately an unacceptable successor to Wayne as Batman II for a period of time while Wayne's back was broken (Prodical Son saga). Grayson returned the role of Batman back to Wayne when Wayne recovered and asked for the role back.
