Synopsis for "Secret of the Sinister Sorcerers"
When all man-made objects on Earth stop working, the Justice League band together to try and figure out the cause of this latest crisis and soon learn that magic has become the dominant force in their universe. Meanwhile in the other worldly dimension known as Magic-Land, the evil magician Simon Magnus has used his magic to transport items of science to that realm to try and over throw it's ruler and his great magician Merlin.
While back in the Earth dimension, the JLA realize that magic spells now work, and so they get a number of books on sorcery to summon Merlin to aid them. When they realize what has happened, Merlin uses his now restored magical powers to transport the Justice League members to the realm of Magic while Snapper and Merlin stay behind on Earth.
The Justice League pair off into groups to stop Magnus and his two cohorts, using their super powers and cunning to get past all their traps and easily destroy whichever scientific device they are using as defense. Afterwards, they capture Magnus and demand that he return to their world and restore everything to normal. However, when traveling to the gate between worlds they have to fight a giant, but with the help of Snapper and Merlin the giant is defeated. Returning to Earth, Merlin is able to reverse the damage done by Magnus and he bids the Justice League farewell.
Notes
- This issue is reprinted in Justice League of America (Volume 1) #48, and Justice League of America Archives, Volume 1.
- It is uncertain whether the Merlin that appears in this issue is the same sorcerer that fathered the demon, Etrigan, and served under Arthur Pendragon in Camelot.
- Aquaman appeared last in Adventure Comics #279. He appears next in Showcase #30.
- Batman appeared last in Detective Comics #286. He appears next in Superman (Volume 1) #142.
- The Flash appeared last in Flash (Volume 1) #117. He appears next in Flash (Volume 1) #118.
- Green Lantern appeared last in Green Lantern (Volume 2) #3. He appears next in Green Lantern (Volume 2) #4.
- Martian Manhunter appeared last in Detective Comics #286. He appears next in Detective Comics #287.
- Superman appeared last in Action Comics #271. He appears next in Superman (Volume 1) #142.
- Wonder Woman appeared last in Wonder Woman (Volume 1) #118. She appears next in Wonder Woman (Volume 1) #119.
Trivia
- First appearance of Jimmy Carr, Snapper's brother. It is established later in the Hourman series, that Snapper also has a brother nick-named "Spitter". Whether Jimmy and Spitter are the same person or two different siblings has yet to be revealed. Jimmy Carr appears next in Justice League of America (Volume 1) #114.
- Wonder Woman's loss of her powers seems odd in light of the fact that supposedly the science based heroes would lose their powers, but as Wonder Woman's power source remains mystical, that should not happen to her. In the JLA Index#2, the power loss gets attributed to a psychosomatic reaction to the situation of the others. The Index also notes that #65's power loss incident happened due to a psychosomatic reaction.
